What is a pedal switcher — and do you actually need one?
I started The GigRig because of two main problems: 1. the more pedals you add to your board, the worse your guitar sounds. Not because the pedals are bad — because of what happens to your signal on the way through them. 2. The dreaded 'Tap Dance'. Hopping from one pedal combination to another often required a level of choreography that I just wasn't comfortable with. A pedal switcher is the fix. Here's how it works, and — honestly — when you don't need one.
The problem: your signal chain is a queue
Every pedal your signal passes through takes a small toll, even switched off. "True bypass" pedals still add cable length and switch contacts; buffered pedals each impose their own buffer, good or bad, whether the effect is on or not. Run your guitar through ten pedals and you're hearing all ten of them, all the time. That gradual dulling — the top end that isn't quite there, the pick attack that's gone soft — is what players call tone suck. You've probably A/B'd your guitar straight into the amp and winced. That's the problem.
What a pedal switcher does
A pedal switcher (or loop switcher) takes your pedals out of the queue. Each pedal sits in its own loop — a send and return — and the switcher only routes your signal through a pedal when that pedal is actually in use. Everything else is bypassed completely: not "true bypass through four sets of switch contacts", but genuinely out of the circuit.
Once your pedals are in loops, two more things become possible:
- Presets. One footswitch press brings in any combination of pedals at once. Verse to chorus without the tap dance.
- A managed signal path. Because the switcher controls the routing, it can do things a chain of pedals never could — like letting a delay ring out naturally after you've switched to a different sound (that's called spillover — we've written a whole guide on it; it's the feature that made us design the G3 the way we did).
When you don't need one
Straight answer, because this stuff costs money:
- You use three or four pedals and they're basically always on. A switcher would be a solution looking for a problem. Spend the money on a good power supply — it'll do more for your sound.
- You never change sounds mid-song. Presets can't help you if one sound per song is your thing.
- Your board already sounds right to you. Trust your ears over anyone's marketing, including ours.
You do want one when: you've got six-plus pedals and you can hear the chain; you're doing two-or-three-pedal tap dances between sections; you use vintage or fussy pedals whose bypass you don't trust; or you're gigging and need the same sounds to come back every night.
The three tiers of switching

What's the difference between a loop switcher and a MIDI controller?
A MIDI controller sends messages to pedals that understand MIDI; your audio still runs through every pedal. A loop switcher routes the audio itself. Integrated systems like G3 do both — audio loops for the pedals that need them, MIDI for the ones that speak it.
Does a pedal switcher change your tone?
A good one does the opposite — it takes everything out of your signal path that doesn't need to be there. What you should hear is your guitar and amp, closer than you've had them since your board was two pedals.
How many loops do I need?
Count the pedals you switch (not always-on utilities), then add two for the board you'll have in a year. Ten switched pedals is the classic reason people land on 12 loops.
Can you use a pedal switcher with a stereo rig?
Yes, if the switcher supports it — G3's loops can pair into stereo loops, and spillover works in true stereo.
