Spillover explained: why your delay cuts off when you switch sounds
You know the moment. Big soaring solo, delay repeating into the rafters, last note still hanging — and you stomp back to your rhythm sound. Silence. The delay you were riding just vanished, like someone lifted the needle off the record. That's the spillover problem, and solving it properly is one of the reasons the G3 exists.
What's actually happening
A delay or reverb pedal doesn't just process your signal — it holds it. Those repeats and tails live inside the pedal, still playing back after you've stopped picking.
The moment you bypass that pedal — whether with its own footswitch, or by switching to a preset that doesn't include it — you're not just turning the effect off for the next note. You're cutting off the output where those repeats live. Everything the pedal was still saying gets silenced mid-sentence.
Spillover (you'll also hear trails) is the fix: when you change sounds, the delay or reverb you just left keeps ringing out naturally over your new sound, decaying the way it would in a real room. Sounds finish; they don't get switched off.
Why "trails mode" on your pedal doesn't solve it
Plenty of pedals have a trails or buffered-bypass mode, and on its own footswitch, it works. But it works by keeping the pedal's circuitry in your signal path even when it's "off" — which is exactly the always-in-the-chain compromise we talked about in What is a pedal switcher? And the moment that pedal sits in a true-bypass loop, or your preset change routes around it, the trail is gone again. Trails mode and clean switching fight each other — pick one, lose the other.
Unless the switcher is designed for spillover.
How a switching system does it properly
For spillover to survive a preset change, the switcher has to do something cleverer than swap loop A for loop B. When you change presets, the G3 keeps the outgoing delay or reverb loop alive just long enough for its tail to decay — while your dry signal and your new preset carry on through the new routing. You get both things at once: the old sound finishing naturally, the new sound already under your fingers. Fully programmable, per preset, and it works in true stereo — a ping-pong delay spills over still ping-ponging, not folded down to mono.
That last bit matters more than it sounds. Plenty of gear claims spillover; keeping a stereo image intact across a preset change while the rest of the board re-routes underneath it is the hard version of the problem. It's the one we built G3 around.
Hearing it is the whole argument
Reading about spillover is like reading about reverb. Thirty seconds of hearing a trail die versus hearing it bloom over the next sound makes the case better than I can in print.

What's the difference between spillover and trails?
Nothing — they're two words for the same thing: your delay or reverb ringing out naturally instead of being cut off. What differs is where it's done. A pedal's own trails mode keeps that pedal permanently in your signal path; a switching system gives you spillover across preset changes without that compromise.
Does spillover work with any delay or reverb pedal?
That's the point of doing it in the switcher: it doesn't rely on the pedal having a trails mode. Vintage delay with no bypass options? Still spills over, because the switcher manages the transition, not the pedal.
Do multi-FX units have spillover?
Some do between their internal patches — within their own digital world. The difference with a switching system is that it gives spillover to the analogue and digital pedals you already own, instead of asking you to replace them.
