What order should your guitar pedals go in?

Here's the answer nobody wants to hear: there are no rules. Your ears outrank every diagram on the internet, including this one. But the conventional order exists for good reasons, and you'll make much better decisions about breaking it once you understand what those reasons are. So here's the convention, why it works, and the classic places to ignore it.

The conventional chain

Why this shape? Two principles explain almost all of it:

  1. Dynamics-sensitive pedals want your guitar's raw signal. Wahs, fuzzes, compressors and touch-sensitive drives respond to the shape and dynamics of what's coming in. Put a compressor before your drive and the drive sees an already-squashed signal — smoother, more sustain. Put it after and it amplifies the drive's noise along with everything else.
  2. Ambience goes last because that's how physics works. Delay and reverb simulate spaces. Distorting a reverb sounds like a broken speaker; reverb after distortion sounds like a loud amp in a room. That's also why time-based effects hate being in front of a cranked amp — which is what the amp's effects loop is for.

Where the arguments start

Why two modulation points? Because modulation can go anywhere, literally. The Van Halen trick is modulation before drives, which is what I personally like — it feels more integrated into the sound — but modulation after drives sounds more dramatic. You need to try both to find which one you like. Except for this rule... tremolo at the very end. This makes it sound more like an amp. Think about it: amp trem is the power valves modulating their amplitude, so it has that master-volume-going-up-and-down effect. It sounds fantastic, so stick your trem right at the end.

  • Fuzz before wah — or wah before fuzz? Classic exception territory. Fuzzes (especially vintage-style germanium circuits) want to see your guitar's pickup directly and can react badly to a wah in front of them. Hendrix ran wah into fuzz anyway. Try both; there's no wrong answer, only your answer.
  • Drive order: stacking. Two or more drives in a row is where tone lives. Convention says lower-gain first into higher-gain, but flipping that changes the character entirely — one pedal shaping the other. This is the single most rewarding experiment on any board.
  • Volume pedal: before or after gain? Before gain, it cleans up your drive as you back off — like your guitar's volume knob. After gain, it's a master volume for swells that keeps your tone intact at any level. Both are right; they're different tools.

The bit everybody forgets

The order argument assumes each pedal behaves. In a long chain, they don't — every pedal loads your signal whether it's on or not, and by pedal eight the "perfect order" is academic because the top end left at pedal four. That's the real reason pros obsess less about order and more about signal path — which is the whole switching conversation. Get the chain clean first; then order becomes something you can actually hear.

FAQ

Does pedal order really matter?

Yes — but only between certain pedal types. Gain-into-modulation versus modulation-into-gain is a genuinely different sound. Swapping your chorus and phaser? You'll struggle to hear it. Spend your energy where the differences are audible: around gain, and around ambience.

Should delay go in front of the amp or in the effects loop?

If your amp stays clean, in front is fine. If your amp itself is your distortion, delay in front gets mushy fast — that's what the effects loop is for: it puts delay after the preamp's gain, where ambience belongs.

Where should a buffer go?

Where the signal needs rescuing — usually first in the chain (to drive everything from a strong source), and again at the end if you've got a long cable run to the amp. If your fuzz hates buffers, keep the fuzz in front of the first one.

Does the order of pedals in a switcher's loops matter?

The same principles apply — loops run in order too. The difference is that with a switcher like the G3, pedals that aren't in use are genuinely out of the chain, so the order conversation only ever involves the pedals that are actually on.
